An Early Triassic small shelly fossil-style assemblage from the Virgin Limestone Member, Moenkopi Formation, western United States

چکیده
Small shelly fossils (SSFs) are minute moulded or replaced by apatite, and less commonly, other minerals like glauconite iron oxides. This taphonomic mode is best known from Cambrian deposits, though some occurrences occur across geological time. Instances of small shelly-style preservation were found in insoluble residues the Lower Triassic Virgin Limestone Member exposed southern Nevada, western United States, a second such occurrence this unit. Fossil steinkerns tiny brachiopods, echinoid spines ophiuroids fluorapatite, with scarce phosphatic internal moulds bivalves two ostracods. In contrast, crinoid ossicles, almost all which >1000 µm, preserved as stereomic silica dolomite. Though style similar to another fossils-style assemblage, assemblage preserves greater diversity, likely reflecting variation palaeocommunities shelf. The size selectivity phosphatization clear, majority <1000 µm phosphatized. Importantly, original skeletal material does not exert strongest control on preservation: ossicles whilst ophiuroid fragments It that underlying mechanisms related particle skeletons elements coupled local pore water environment. Early equatorial seas characterized warm temperatures lower oxygen levels fostered fossil-style shelf during

Early Triassic Microbial Spheroids in the Virgin Limestone Member of the Moenkopi Formation, Nevada, Usa
Lower Triassic carbonate sedimentary rocks exhibit fabrics and facies indicative of reduced bioturbation and reduced abundance of skeletal animals and algae relative to their Permian counterparts. Widespread microbial mounds are one widely cited example. Micritic spheroids of probable microbial origin occur at a few horizons in the Spathian (uppermost Lower Triassic) Virgin Limestone Member of ...
متن کاملA new Lower Triassic ichthyopterygian assemblage from Fossil Hill, Nevada.
We report a new ichthyopterygian assemblage from Lower Triassic horizons of the Prida Formation at Fossil Hill in central Nevada. Although fragmentary, the specimens collected so far document a diverse fauna. One partial jaw exhibits isodont dentition with blunt tipped, mesiodistally compressed crowns and striated enamel. These features are shared with the Early Triassic genus Utatsusaurus know...
متن کاملPlacunopsis Bioherms: the First Metazoan Buildups following the End-permian Mass Extinction
Outcrops of the Lower Triassic (Spathian) Virgin Limestone Member (Moenkopi Formation) in the southwestern United States contain the oldest known metazoan bioherms formed in the aftermath of the endPermian mass extinction. These small buildups, up to 1.0 m in diameter and 0.2 m high, were constructed by cementing bivalves. The bivalve bioherms accreted in a shallow, subtidal environment above s...
متن کاملTriassic Vertebrate Fossils in Arizona
The Triassic System in Arizona has yielded numerous world-class fossil specimens, including numerous type specimens. The oldest Triassic vertebrates from Arizona are footprints and (largely) temnospondyl bones from the Nonesian (Early Triassic: Spathian) Wupatki Member of the Moenkopi Formation. The Perovkan (early Anisian) faunas of the Holbrook Member of the Moenkopi Formation are exceptional...
متن کاملPalaeoecology of the Spathian Virgin Formation (Utah, USA) and its implications for the Early Triassic recovery
The Spathian (late Early Triassic) Virgin Formation of south-western Utah (U.S.A.) yields a comparatively diverse benthic fauna that flourished 2 Ma after the end-Permian mass extinction. In this study, we present quantitative palaeoecological data, which are analysed in the context of their depositional environments. This integrated approach helps to discriminate between effects of the end-Per...
